COLD SORE TREATMENT 101
What causes cold sores? I’m going to tell you how to get rid of cold sores fast.
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus – and once you have the virus, it stays with you for life. Some people who carry the virus rarely get breakouts, whilst others are a little less lucky. They can be frustratingly hard to manage when they become more & more frequent & healing time increases – this is a red flag that your immune system needs support⚠
I clearly remember the first one I ever got – because I got really sick with flu like symptoms and it was extremely painful. At the time I didn’t understand what was going on, and I felt like there was something really not right with me. From that point forward I started getting them every couple of months, then it was every couple of weeks.
Now everyone raves on about high doses of Lysine being a miracle cure for cold sores, but I personally found that it did nothing for me. Even cold sore creams did nothing for me – if anything I found that the severity of my cold sores got WORSE when I used Acyclovir (the cream you get from the Chemist). My cold sores became resistant to everything and at one point, I was getting them every 2 to 3 weeks – one would just heal and another would rear its ugly head. Then I got so sick once with the worst flu of my life, and had 5 cold sores all at the same time – it was horrendous!
So, as someone who has in the past suffered from chronic cold sores that became resistant to all of the commonly touted ‘remedies’, I spent a significant amount of time reviewing the scientific evidence. I’ve tried and tested many different natural treatments and compiled the best. I hardly get cold sores any more, and now I want to share with you how you can overcome this nasty little virus as well.
Currently i’m working on a very special cold sore cream that will be available for purchase from my website. I’m in the process of testing at the moment and I can’t wait to share it with you because so far the results have been amazing. BUT, I also want to emphasise that you must work on your immune system as well.
The BEST herbal medicines for cold sore treatment to take internally include Uncaria tomentosa (Cat’s claw), Glycyrrhiza glabra (Licorice), Hypericum perforatum (St Johns wort), Echinacea purpurea (Echinacea) and Melissa officinalis (Lemon balm) for a period of 3+ months. These are used in the form of liquid extracts blended in a special ratio, and are highly effective way to attack the virus by supporting the immune system, stopping viral replication, and improving stress response to significantly reduce/eliminate the number of breakouts.
You also need to look at your nutrition. Check in with your diet & reduce/eliminate sugars, which suppress the immune system. This is ALL types of sugars, yes natural ones to. Further, look the foods you are eating and their lysine:arginine ratio. You want to be consuming more lysine than arginine and a simple google search will be able to help you with that. Supplementing with Lysine at doses of 2000mg per day can be useful for some people. For me, I did not find this helpful but some do. As soon as you feel that breakout coming, start the Lysine. If your cold sores are chronic (you are getting them frequently) you might want to consider taking Lysine daily for a couple of months. If you don’t find it to be helpful, just discontinue supplementing. Zinc is another supplement that is useful. Whilst it does not specifically affect the virus itself, this mineral plays an important role in the immune system therefore is beneficial in those who suffer from chronic cold sores.
Lastly, and most importantly, I want to talk about STRESS.
Stress plays a significant factor in cold sore outbreaks, because it (along with sugar) suppresses the immune system. When I think back to the time when I was getting chronic outbreaks, I didn’t realise at the time how stressed I actually had been for a number of months. And I get it, that its easier said than done to ‘reduce stress levels’. Sometimes its not that simple! When you have a busy life with 1000 things to get done in a day and not enough time to get it all done and sleep – stress is a given. What you can do though, is support your body to be able to manage that stress better, with herbal medicine. I prescribe adaptogens, anxiolytics, mild sedatives etc and it never ceases to amaze me how quickly and how well they work. Most people have noticeable changes in the way they feel within a couple of days to a couple of weeks. Earlier I mentioned Melissa officinalis (along with a couple of other herbal medicines), which not only has been proven effective against the herpes virus but it is also a calming herb that acts as a mild sedative – so it helps you to relax a little, reducing stress and anxiety and promoting restful sleep.
So as you can see, treating cold sores effectively requires a holistic approach – not just application of an antiviral cream from the chemist. Thats just a bandaid, its not going to treat the cause of the outbreaks. Treatment objectives are to treat the virus with antivirals and improve the immune system with immune enhancer and immune modulators, improve nutrition by reducing sugars/refined carbohydrates and looking at lysine:arginine consumption, and lastly support stress response with anxiolytics, adaptogens and mild sedatives. A Naturopath is the perfect person to assist you in reducing healing time and reducing frequency of outbreaks – just be sure to choose one who practices in herbal medicine and has experience in dealing with patients who suffer from this nasty little virus.
